The market of construction tools and consumables is one of the key sectors of the construction industry, which has developed into a holistic and competitive system offering a wide range of tools and materials for construction and repair.
Construction tools are traditionally divided into 2 subgroups: the first is power tools, the second is hand tools and consumables. The first segment is currently seeing significant growth in sales globally, with the Russian market accounting for about 1.8% of the total.
In Moscow and the Moscow region, the undisputed sales leader until 2022 was power tools from the Makita brand. The company's share before the crisis was 20% of total sales, today - no more than 5%. Since the second half of 2022, Makita has been in fourth place in terms of sales, and companies in the cheaper segment, such as Vikhr, Interskol, Zubr and Sturm, have strengthened their positions in the top places in the ranking.
There has been a real boom in activity in the construction industry now — we are seeing record figures for the construction of residential and commercial properties in Moscow. At the same time, the city is developing the direction of building new transport interchanges. Since January 2022, repair work has been in demand — fearing a housing shortage and rising real estate prices, Muscovites have begun to buy more residential and non-residential premises. Only a slight decline in the sphere of apartment repairs was noted in the third quarter of 2023. This trend could be due to the fact that the focus of buyers has shifted to housing with finished repairs.
The competition in the construction tool market is quite high, and the number of players in the field is constantly growing. Among the strong players in this area are Vse Instrumenty, Petrovich, Mir Instrumenta and Max Master. Brands have to constantly develop new marketing moves in addition to maintaining quality and low prices in order to survive in a highly competitive market. For example, such customer attraction tools as guaranteed delivery within 4 hours, a technician's visit to the site to repair a power tool or sales where every third product is offered free of charge are used. Recently, many have had to turn a blind eye to dumping in order to maintain sales, because even a small setback can cause a loss of market positions.
The construction industry is a dynamic and developing sector of the economy. Participants in this market are provided with wide opportunities for development, which certainly requires constant innovation.
Import substitution is one of the areas that is currently actively developing in the domestic market. The advantages of this approach are increased diversification of the economy, strengthening of national security and expansion of export potential.
One of the reasons accompanying active import substitution in the construction market was the global changes in logistics in 2022. The increase in delivery times from two to five months required rapid adaptation to new conditions. Manufacturers' warehouse stock usually lasts 5-6 months, and a new solution had to be found during this period.
In this regard, for example, our company was actively searching for alternative suppliers of products in Russia. Most of the goods that were produced in Europe - foam, glue, sealants - were successfully replaced with alternatives from Chinese and Russian manufacturers.
And yet, only about 60% of manufacturers in the construction market today are Russian companies. For some hand tool items, the segment still depends on Chinese partners, but we hope that in the near future, the production of the entire range of cutting, measuring and diamond tools will be implemented in Russia. This will allow us to abandon imports and ensure stable production and supply of goods.
In the period from January 2022 to January 2023, all participants in the construction market faced new challenges. However, the departure of some companies and the logical reduction in product diversity became an opportunity for the development of the sector, including in terms of increasing competition among domestic manufacturers and reducing dependence on foreign suppliers.
Sales dynamics are a key indicator of the state of the construction tools market and its potential. Over the past year, the industry has been subject to significant changes in the context of economic instability - therefore, the level of sales of construction tools has changed significantly.
For example, in the first 2 months of 2022, many leading construction companies temporarily froze new projects. And after the announcement of full-scale sanctions, panic appeared in the market, and all trading companies began to fill their warehouses, fearing shortages and rising prices.
As an example of market behavior, we can cite two of the largest suppliers of hand tools. One of them raised prices every day without warning. In the morning, their customers could buy a roller for 125 rubles, and by evening its cost was already 150 rubles - and such rapid price changes continued for two weeks.
The second example is a major supplier who stopped shipping for a few days to recalculate the cost of their products, and then came back with prices 50% higher. The supplier's cost continued to rise, and by the end of the month, the product was on average 95% more expensive than the original cost in both the power and hand tool categories.
Another negative factor that affected sales dynamics was the departure of two major sea carriers from the market. This led to companies using railway routes that were overloaded, which was reflected in an increase in the final cost of goods. With the strengthening of the ruble at the end of the second quarter, prices returned to the level of early 2022.
It is worth noting that the industry has already survived the crisis. At the moment, the market is quite stable, and, according to analysts, domestic demand has recovered to the level of 2021.
If no changes occur and the mortgage interest rate remains at the same level, the entire construction sector will develop at the same pace until 2024. The government has already announced the construction of new roads and projects, as well as renovation plans until 2038. The sales dynamics in the construction tool market have a clear upward trend. Economic instability, innovations in technology and changing consumer preferences affect this dynamics. It is expected that demand will continue to grow in the future, especially for innovative and environmentally friendly tools, which provides companies in this industry with an opportunity to develop and grow.
The market of construction tools and consumables is an important sector of the construction industry. Analysis of the market situation shows its high competitive potential. The problem of import substitution remains relevant, as it requires the development of effective strategies to strengthen domestic production. The dynamics of sales in the market is associated with the development of the construction industry and may vary depending on the economic situation.
In general, the market for construction tools and consumables remains a promising and in-demand sector of the economy and offers broad opportunities for development and innovation.
